This article attempts a panoramic view of the treatment to which gambling is subjected in our legal system, with special note being given to Portuguese civil, penal, and fiscal rules. Beyond focusing on aspects of legal dogmatics, the author aims at formulating evaluations of legislative policies and endeavours in a social critique. The chosen posture is thus one more subjective than what is normally the case in juridical studies.
