Maritime commerce is responsible for 87% of world merchandise trade in volume and 70% in value. By offering low marginal transportation costs, container shipping has been the main enabler of the long supply chains that drive the global economy. However, recent events, notably the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, have shown that these supply chains are rather vulnerable to external disturbances, thus raising anti-globalization sentiments that affect maritime transport. This report addresses the main change factors that will determine the future of maritime transport and offers a vision for Portugal's role in that future.
