The paper aims to challenge the narratives of global human rights under a comparative law perspective. This will be done by testing whether, and to what extent those narratives correspond to the actual ways in which human rights reach into (and sometimes trample on) the lives of people and groups. After surveying the reasons underlying the criticism of current dogmas, the essay will try to articulate a cognitive path that, without sacrificing anything of the nobleness of the idea, could avoid ideological traps, and set up a working framework close to the reality of times, places, and cultures’ dynamics.
