In a May 1997 conference, Portugal responded to this issue and its particular implications for the role of health and social service professionals in preventing violence and caring for the survivors of abuse and their families. The Sociedade Portuguesa de Psicologia Comunitária and the Associação de Mulheres Contra a Violência hosted a three-day interdisciplinary conference in Lisbon to address Portuguese concerns and action strategies focusing on the international epidemic of family and intimate partner violence. This paper summarizes the main themes of the conference, its outcomes, and implications for follow-up education and training programs in Portugal. |
