Although alcohol use is strongly associated with an increased risk of offending and harm to others, constructive engagement with chronic drinkers remains one of the probation worker's biggest challenges. Andy Taylor argues that a more sophisticated understanding of the "processes of denial" can enhance assessment and intervention with such offenders. He draws on the findings of recent research examining the assessment process in pre-sentence reports to support his argument.
