Probation training is now characterised by its integration of a skills-based National Vocational Qualification, with the broader demands of intensive degree-level study. Helen Schofield argues that whatever its shortcomings, the new training has a highly contemporary formation, which will make it capable of meeting the needs of probation staff, employers and the community in the 21st Century.
