Larry Ray, David Smith and Liz Wastell discuss their research on perpetrators of serious racially motivated violence. They emphasise the importance of "unacknowledged shame" as a contributor to such offending, and argue that interventions based on confrontation and challenge are unlikely to promote positive change.
