Drawing upon a crime that took place in l7th century Lisbon, the article examines some of its legal and historical aspects. A cursory look at 17th century legal sources indicates how complex the existing laws applicable were to interpret and enforce at that time. The establishment of two Consororities composed of commoners is also considered, in that its statutes — or commitments — include rules of conduct which reflect the mindset prevailing at that time. The extinction of one of the two Consororities in the 19th century, while the other has remained to this day, expresses some of the ruptures and continuities of historicity.
