This essay aims to contextualize the mass resignation of the Pro-democracy members of the Hong Kong Legislative Council following the removal of three lawmakers of the Civic Party and one lawmaker of the Professionals Guild at the hands of the Executive Council, returning them within a geopolitical framework that sees the People’s Republic of China vigorously accelerate the process of integrating the former British colony into the continental political and legal system, thus questioning the “One Country, Two Systems" principle established by the Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984 as the guiding criterion for Hong Kong’s return to China in 2047.
