Summary
This paper is divied into three parts. In the first one, we adrees the issue of the aftermath of the attmpts perpetrated against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in September 2001. The main sequel to these attempts was that the struggle against terrorism was redefined as a war to be continued by the military. Truth being the first casualty of war, we do not presently have access to the information that would permit us an enlightened appraisal of the present predicament. In the second part, we try to see what the lessons of this crisis are. In this regard, we suggest that we ougth to redefine our expectations in respect to the role of intelligence in the prevention and resolution of such crises. Finally, we look to the future and identify two issues of paramount importance: the possible war against Iraq as profiled against the background of US politics and the militarization of internal security in Western countries.
