MULHER, POLICIA, FRANÇA

Women entered active service in the Parisian police by doing a job that was considered as “feminine” in 1935 and, from 1968-1983 gradually conquered eligibility, rank by rank, for all the national police examinations. These victories were accompanied by certain conditions; the pioneers at each rank in the hierarchy were subject to quotas and only the best were accepted. Their long consignment to the juvenile bureau and their delayed accession to the police « in uniform » indicates the degree of difficulty, but also the aspiration of the police as an institution to be a socially neutral and polyvalent agent of public order.
